Preserving the Fabrics of Your Life Workshop

Date: 1/12/2012 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Do you have a special dress you would like to save? Would you like to preserve your child’s baby blanket or your great-grandmother’s quilt? Join staff to learn about the conservation of textiles. This workshop will include hands-on demonstrations of cleaning, wrapping, and storing textiles of all types. Participants will receive samples of conservation supplies and instructions for home use. Learn the do’s and don’ts of collecting and storing items for the future.

Author Series Continues With Local Interest

Varner Hogg Plantation's Author Series continues in Janaury with Ginny Raska, editor of "The Uncompromising Diary of Sallie McNeill 1858-1867". Ms. Raska is a direct descent of the McNeill family and resides locally. She and her co-editor Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill carefully transcribed and edited the fascinating diaries Sallie kept for so many years. Join us on Thursday, January 19th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Visitor and Programming Center to hear Ms. Raska speak. Copies of the book are available for purchase in the museum shop and can be autographed that evening. For more information please call 345-4656. This, the third in a series of four programs featuring author's discussing their books on Texas history is funded in part by a generous grant from the Conoco-Phillips Corporation.

Breakfast on the Bernard-Officially, Pancake Day is later this month on Shrove Tuesday but this Saturday pancakes are on the breakfast menu. Plus scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, coffee,  juice and milk. Catered by Uncommon Affairs. Cost:$6.00.

Adopt-A-Highway

Immediately following breakfast, volunteer to help pick up trash along a two mile stretch of road before and after the Churchill Bridge, geginning at CR 311 and ending at FM 2918.

Meet at the Churchill bridge boat ramp parking lot around 10:00 a.m.

Bring a hat, gloves, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Strong shoes or boots are a good idea. TXDOT and F.O.R. will supply the rest. Help keep the San Bernard looking good!

This is one of West Columbia’s newest parks and is under development. Currently, this is the only park with an outdoor basketball court. This fundraiser is to help with the development of Dixon Park with pavilion, restroom, playground and parking facilities.

$60.00 Dollars per Team and Every Player must have a completed registration form.

Team registration is Friday February 17 6-8pm @ Dixon Park

Register your team of 3 to 4 players and a coach to play in the first Dixon Basketball Tournament!

Pick from one of the divisions and get registered!

Division I (Ages 6-8) Division II (Ages 9-10) Division III (Ages 11-13)

Division IV (Ages 14-15) Division V (Ages 16-18 must show school ID)

B.O.B-Saturday, April 7th, 2012-West of the Brazos Communities in Brazoria County, Texas invites the public to participate in or attend the family friendly third annual Battle On the Bernard (B.O.B.), a tug of war competition across the San Bernard River. The event will start at noon with the first tug starting at 1 p.m. Competition is limited to the first 16 teams entered. Team entries and entrance to the event are free. A Photo Finish Workshop

Do you have a stack of boxes containing film, negatives, and photos in your home? Perhaps albums from your parents or early negatives? Join us for a workshop and learn how to preserve photographs for the future. Participants will learn the proper archival settings for scanning images, as well as how to handle film, Polaroid photos, and negatives, and will take home samples of products to help store images.
